Sehr gut. Olivenholz ist hart und dicht und lässt sich auf der Drechselbank sauber bearbeiten und auf Hochglanz schleifen. Beim Hobeln und Fräsen neigt es wegen der wilden Faser zu Ausrissen – scharfe Werkzeuge und geringe Spanabnahme helfen. Beim Bearbeiten verströmt es einen fruchtigen Duft; Staubschutz tragen, da das Holz in seltenen Fällen Haut und Augen reizen kann.

Zum Drechseln scharfe HSS-Röhren und Schaber, zum Zuschneiden eine Band- oder Feinsäge, für Formarbeiten Raspeln und Schnitzmesser. Weil Olivenholz sehr hart ist, stumpfen Werkzeuge schneller ab – regelmäßig nachschärfen. Geschliffen wird stufenweise bis Körnung 400 oder feiner, danach mit Öl oder Wachs finishen. Beim Schleifen eine Staubmaske tragen.

Dieses Kantholz misst 30 x 30 x 300 mm. Schmale Kanteln (z. B. 20 × 20 mm) sind typische Rohlinge für Kugelschreiber und Füller, flache Stücke für Messergriffe, Anhänger oder Intarsien, dicke Blöcke für Schalen, Dosen oder Griffe.

Trocken, luftig und ohne direkte Sonne oder Heizungswärme lagern, damit das Holz nicht reißt. Stirnseiten, die angeschnitten werden, bei längerer Lagerung mit Wachs oder Leim versiegeln. Fertig gedrechselte Stücke mit Öl, Wachs oder Schellack behandeln.

Sehr hart: Olivenholz erreicht eine Janka-Härte von rund 12.000 Newton und ist damit etwa doppelt so hart wie Buche oder Eiche. Mit einer Dichte von rund 980 kg/m³ zählt es zu den schwersten europäischen Hölzern. Bei richtiger Pflege halten Produkte aus Olivenholz viele Jahre bis Jahrzehnte.
